Lucknow: Medanta has taken a major leap in advanced spine and neurosurgical care by launching the O-Arm Spine Suite at its Lucknow hospital, becoming the first healthcare facility in the city to deploy this state-of-the-art intraoperative imaging and navigation system. The technology is expected to significantly enhance the safety, speed and accuracy of complex spine and cranial surgeries.
Unlike conventional procedures that depend on MRI or CT scans taken outside the operation theatre, the O-Arm system enables real-time, high-definition 2D and 3D imaging during surgery. Often compared to a GPS for the spine, it helps surgeons precisely locate anatomical structures, even in highly sensitive and narrow regions.

Dr Rakesh Kapoor, Medical Director and Director – Urology and Kidney Transplant Surgery at Medanta, said the introduction of the O-Arm Spine Suite reflects the hospital’s commitment to bringing world-class medical technology to Uttar Pradesh. He noted that the system improves surgical precision while also reducing recovery time for patients.
Dr Kamlesh Singh Bhaisora, Director – Neurosurgery, highlighted that real-time three-dimensional imaging allows surgeons to immediately verify accuracy during procedures. This results in smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, shorter operative duration and quicker recovery when compared to traditional open surgeries.

Emphasising patient safety, Dr Ravi Shankar, Director – Neurosurgery, said the continuous navigation support provided by the O-Arm enhances confidence while performing high-risk and delicate surgeries involving complex anatomy.
From a spine and orthopaedics perspective, Dr Swetabh Verma, Associate Director – Orthopaedics and Spine, said the technology is particularly beneficial for minimally invasive spine surgeries. Precise implant placement and minimal tissue disruption lead to less post-operative pain, allowing many patients to be discharged within two to three days.
The O-Arm Spine Suite combines advanced imaging with computer-assisted navigation, optimising operation theatre workflow and lowering radiation exposure. Medanta officials said the facility will serve patients not only from Lucknow but also from surrounding regions, setting a new standard in advanced spine and neurosurgical care in North India.
